The amount of decorating you’ll be able to accomplish in your foyer will depend on the amount of space with which you have to work. Keep in mind, however, that in even the grandest of entrances, an uncluttered look is best.

Make decorating your foyer a fun project. Begin by painting the walls the perfect color using any number of painting techniques. From there, add on the layers. Install coordinated window treatments that still allow natural light to flow through. Find a mirror with a frame that complements the theme of the foyer and hang it on a wall that’s certain to be noticed. If you’ve got enough wall space, select pictures, photos or other wall decorations that match the theme and that also match the mirror frame and hang these around the foyer.

Flowers brighten any room, so when decorating, find room in your foyer for a floral arrangement. Again, the size you select depends on the size of the foyer. A large, two-story open foyer needs an arrangement that’s both large and tall. If there’s room, set the arrangement atop a beautiful round table placed in the center of the space. There’s no rule that says furnishings must abut walls!

When decorating your foyer, decide whether you want your guests and your family members to remove footwear before entering your home. If so, have a place for these items. A small carpet works fine, but so does a decorative shoe rack. Seats work well in foyers, too. Use seating for removing/putting on shoes, for resting, or as a place to set down groceries, packages, mail or newspapers.

Finally, for a truly unique look in your foyer, add an item of special interest to your decorating efforts. A cherished antique handed down through the generations, an intricate umbrella stand, or something you picked up during your last vacation are examples of items that not only look great in your foyer, but also make great conversation pieces.
